Uhuru regains control of Jubilee Party as court ends power struggles

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has regained full control of the Jubilee Party after the High Court upheld resolutions from a 2023 National Delegates Conference, ending a drawn-out leadership dispute that had split the party.
In its judgment delivered on Thursday, June 12, the court validated the outcome of the NDC held in May 2023, where Kenyatta had presided over sweeping leadership changes.

The court also confirmed that he had the legal authority to convene the meeting and guide the party’s affairs, reinstating him as Jubilee Party leader.
The ruling followed submissions made by lawyer Jackson Awele, representing Kenyatta’s faction with support from the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee.
Awele's team filed a formal application seeking to overturn the leadership changes previously made by a rival faction allied to former Kieni MP Kanini Kega and Nominated MP Sabina Chege.
With the court’s ruling, Saitoti Torome has now been confirmed as Jubilee's new National Chairman, while Jeremiah Kioni retains his position as Secretary-General.
David Murathe also retains his seat as Vice Chairperson, and Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi remains in office.
A statement by the party celebrated the verdict, saying, “Victory as the high court rules that the Jubilee Party belongs to Uhuru Kenyatta. Justice Janet Mulwa also nullified the Kanini-Sabina-led NEC that purported to remove Jeremiah Kioni, David Murathe, and Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi.”
The ruling effectively nullifies any changes made by the Kega-Chege group, stripping them of the party’s leadership and reversing a previous court decision issued on September 30, 2024, which had temporarily handed over control to their side.
In that decision, the court declined to recognise Kenyatta’s team and upheld the rival National Executive Council.
In March 2025, former party chairman Nelson Dzuya backed the legitimacy of the NDC convened by Kenyatta, admitting that while procedural concerns had been raised, the former president was within his rights to call and lead the meeting.
The fallout in Jubilee began after the Kega-Chege faction attempted to eject Kenyatta’s allies through internal mechanisms.
